Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation and Concealer

Like I need anymore foundation or concealer.

But for review purposes and for my own addiction, I couldn’t stay away from one of  newer foundation/concealer releases from the drugstore — Maybelline Superstay Better Skin foundation and concealer.

On the Maybelline website (about the foundation):

Longwear foundation that improves skin’s appearance every minute you’re in it.  With the antioxidant power of Actyl-C, a more durable form of vitamin C.  For all skin types. Medium to full coverage.

Superstay Better Skin Foundation gives an all-day flawless coverage and better-looking skin in 3 weeks. The foundation reduces the appearance of spots, dullness and uneveness and gives you a brighter, more even and stress-free skin.

The foundation comes in 12 shades and the concealer comes in 6 shades, ranging from very light to tan/dark.

I ended up picking up the shade 85 Sun Beige in the foundation and Medium in the concealer. At first glance, a lot of the lighter foundation shades look to have quite pink undertones and the medium/darker shades have more neutral undertones.  Unfortunately for someone who has yellow undertones like me, drugstore foundations don’t typically cater to me (MAC NC40 for reference). I was pleasantly surprised however, that 85 Sun Beige ended up pulling ever so slightly yellow once it set on my face.

Let’s talk about formula. So this foundation is supposed to actually improve the look and texture of your skin after 3 weeks of wear. I can’t attest to this claim as I’ve only been wearing this for a week or so and just couldn’t wait to review!

The texture of this foundation is actually very nice — a light, liquid, almost gel-like texture. Very easy to blend out on the skin. I’ve tried applying this with both a brush and beauty blender and it applies well, although I like the more natural finish it gives with the beauty blender.

The foundation gives a light to medium coverage, but I think this can be built up to a fuller coverage if that’s what you’re looking for. As you can tell from the swatches, the foundation is slightly more watery in texture compared to the concealer. The foundation gives me a satin-matte finish on the skin and the concealer gives more of a matte finish, without looking flat or cakey.

I like that the foundation has a pump — less messy and controlled amount means less waste!

Lasting power of the foundation?  I’d say a good 9-10 hours. I find that it seems to control my oil quite well. I would say it oxidizes just a smidgen but not so much that it makes me look too off. I really like how this foundation looks upon application and how it wears through the day.

The concealer is medium to full coverage and lasts up to 6 hours (under my eyes and around my nose, but maybe that’s because I tend to touch those parts of my face throughout the day). Setting this with a light dusting of powder prevents creasing or settling into my fine lines. I like this concealer, but I don’t love it.

In comparison with the ever-so-popular Maybelline FitMe Matte + Poreless Foundation, I think I prefer this Maybelline foundation better. It lasts longer, it give a bit more fuller coverage, it feels like nothing on the skin and it wears nice through out the day.

I give the Maybelline Better Skin foundation and concealer both: a HIGH FIVE

February Favourites 2015

Perhaps I’m a little late on this but better late than never!  I’ve put together some of my favourite items for the month of February: a bit of makeup, skincare and haircare.

Where I’ve done a previous review on product, I will link in the product name in case you want to read more of what I think about it!!

My February Faves!

My February Faves!

Maybelline FitMe Matte + Poreless Foundation

I had orginally purchased this back in December and I’ve probably reached for this foundation the most out of everything I have — especially this month. I actually have a back-up bottle on the ready once I run out of this one! Love this foundation. Great medium coverage, matte (but not too matte) and easy formula to work with. Probably going to be one of my forever drugstore foundation loves!

NYX Baked Blush in Ignite

This is a more recent purchase, however I’ve reached for this blush the most in February. This blush not only gives a great wash of colour, but also illuminates my skin. The shade I have — Ignite– is a warm, deep peach shade that I think compliments my medium skintone. When I want a wash of colour, without looking “flat”, this was my go-to in February!

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara

My most reached for mascara in February! Despite some flaking, this mascara is amazing for giving length, defining and curling.

Tresemme Perfectly (Un)Done Waves Sea Salt Spray

For someone with naturally wavy hair, this spray really helps to amp up and hold that wave. A little bit of this goes a long way (with too much spraying, I’ve ended up with hard and sticky locks) so it’s best to lightly mist over damp hair, scrunch up and let air or blow dry. And the smell of this? It has sea kelp extract in it, so I assume that is what makes it smell so good! What I would imagine an ocean smells like!

Nails Inc. Nailpolish in Porchester Square

The best “nude” nail polish shade for me. When I’m in the mood to paint my nails, but I don’t want to go something bold, I turn to this shade to give me some colour, yet staying neutral. It’s hard to describe — a mix of beige, light grey, lilac — all rolled into this little bottle!

Olay Facial Wipes for Sensitive Skin

I’ve been using these wipes for many, many months, so I thought I’d finally give them proper recognition in my February faves!  Although I don’t necessarily have sensitive skin, I really like the performance of these facial wipes. Gentle, minimal fragrance, does not irritate and good at taking off the bulk of my makeup before I actually cleanse. I’ve probably gone through about one package every month for the last 7 months. They come in packs of 30.

There you have it, my February Faves! Have you tried any of these products? Like or dislike?

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara

Hey Pretties!

I don’t know how they do it, but Maybelline has knocked it out of the park again with this new Lash Sensational Mascara. I should be surprised though — the majority of my mascara collection and favourites are Maybelline brand (and L’oreal mascaras too. FYI – L’oreal owns Maybelline, so I’m not surprised of my love for mascaras under these two brands!) (Except for the L’oreal Miss Manga mascara… didn’t impress me.)

According to the Maybelline website it decribes the mascara as follows:

Our volume fanning brush with 10 layers of bristles captures and unfolds layer upon layer of lashes for the new full fan look

Product Details

New Lash Sensational Mascara from Maybelline New York. Our first volume fanning brush with 10 layers of bristles captures, reveals and unfolds every last lash. Liquid Ink formula coats from all sides. For a sensational full fan look.

For Best Results

1) Use inner curve to reach the roots of lashes
2) Follow through tips of lashes with longer bristles to fan out

This mascara definitely gives my lashes a lot of volume and length. With about two coats (only using the inner curved side with shorter bristles) it really does pull my lashes from the root and coats them into long, fanned-out lashes with no clumps.

I really like the design of the brush; although Maybelline suggests to use the inner curve first and then the outer curve to fan out the lashes even more to create more length, I honestly find I get great results by just using the inner curve. For me, using a mascara brush that is curved the opposite direction is awkward and doesn’t feel like I’m grabbing onto the lashes anyway. So I have left this step out. But when I did try to use it, I would say yes, it did manage to give my lashes that extra “oomph” in length.

The only gripe I have with this mascara is that it has a tendency to flake. Rubbing my eye will result in flakes; however even when I don’t, by the end of my work day I’ll find a few flakes on my upper cheek. Not a big deal but a bit of an annoyance.

With this waterproof version, I found this wears very well throughout the day (except for the minimal flaking). My lashes held their curl and volume as well.

I bought this on sale at SDM for $6.99 Cdn.

I give the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara: a HIGH FIVE
