Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation and Concealer

Like I need anymore foundation or concealer.

But for review purposes and for my own addiction, I couldn’t stay away from one of  newer foundation/concealer releases from the drugstore — Maybelline Superstay Better Skin foundation and concealer.

On the Maybelline website (about the foundation):

Longwear foundation that improves skin’s appearance every minute you’re in it.  With the antioxidant power of Actyl-C, a more durable form of vitamin C.  For all skin types. Medium to full coverage.

Superstay Better Skin Foundation gives an all-day flawless coverage and better-looking skin in 3 weeks. The foundation reduces the appearance of spots, dullness and uneveness and gives you a brighter, more even and stress-free skin.

The foundation comes in 12 shades and the concealer comes in 6 shades, ranging from very light to tan/dark.

I ended up picking up the shade 85 Sun Beige in the foundation and Medium in the concealer. At first glance, a lot of the lighter foundation shades look to have quite pink undertones and the medium/darker shades have more neutral undertones.  Unfortunately for someone who has yellow undertones like me, drugstore foundations don’t typically cater to me (MAC NC40 for reference). I was pleasantly surprised however, that 85 Sun Beige ended up pulling ever so slightly yellow once it set on my face.

Let’s talk about formula. So this foundation is supposed to actually improve the look and texture of your skin after 3 weeks of wear. I can’t attest to this claim as I’ve only been wearing this for a week or so and just couldn’t wait to review!

The texture of this foundation is actually very nice — a light, liquid, almost gel-like texture. Very easy to blend out on the skin. I’ve tried applying this with both a brush and beauty blender and it applies well, although I like the more natural finish it gives with the beauty blender.

The foundation gives a light to medium coverage, but I think this can be built up to a fuller coverage if that’s what you’re looking for. As you can tell from the swatches, the foundation is slightly more watery in texture compared to the concealer. The foundation gives me a satin-matte finish on the skin and the concealer gives more of a matte finish, without looking flat or cakey.

I like that the foundation has a pump — less messy and controlled amount means less waste!

Lasting power of the foundation?  I’d say a good 9-10 hours. I find that it seems to control my oil quite well. I would say it oxidizes just a smidgen but not so much that it makes me look too off. I really like how this foundation looks upon application and how it wears through the day.

The concealer is medium to full coverage and lasts up to 6 hours (under my eyes and around my nose, but maybe that’s because I tend to touch those parts of my face throughout the day). Setting this with a light dusting of powder prevents creasing or settling into my fine lines. I like this concealer, but I don’t love it.

In comparison with the ever-so-popular Maybelline FitMe Matte + Poreless Foundation, I think I prefer this Maybelline foundation better. It lasts longer, it give a bit more fuller coverage, it feels like nothing on the skin and it wears nice through out the day.

I give the Maybelline Better Skin foundation and concealer both: a HIGH FIVE

Sephora Beauty Insider 500 Point Perk: Laura Mercier 5-Piece Kit

My first Sephora 500 point perk reward and it’s a Laura Mercier 5-piece kit — my lucky day!  Having tried the LM Soft Focus Pressed Setting Powder and the LM Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer and really loving them and the brand, I was so excited to get this kit.  The makeup gods were looking down on me for sure!

Laura Mercier 500 point perk from Sephora

Laura Mercier 500 point perk from Sephora

Let’s go through each product and I’ll tell you what I think!

Face Polish:  This is a nice cleanser. It has very fine exfoliating beads that are super gentle on the skin. It has a slight peach scent to it, or something fruit-like. It rinses away clean and doesn’t overstrip my skin. I believe this retails for around $38Cdn for a full size at Sephora; quite a hefty price for a cleanser that’s just ‘meh’ in my opinion. But good, nonetheless.

Foundation Primer in Radiance Bronze:  This primer has a water-based gel texture, tinted with a beautiful bronze sheen and hydrating on the skin. Having combination skin, I found this to look a little shiny but nothing to severe (a little goes a long way). All over my face as a primer, this gives me a healthy glow (on my medium skin tone I had no issues with this looking orange on me; however I’ve read a lot of reviews from fair/light skinned ladies that found this primer to be too dark).  I actually like using this to darken up some lighter (i.e. winter shades) foundations and tinted moisturizers I have so they match my summer skin. This primer (as with most) does help to create a smooth canvas before foundation application; but as far as keeping my makeup in place longer, I didn’t find anything outstanding in that respect.

Tinted Moisturizer in Nude:  I have the oil-free version of LM’s tinted moisturizer in the colour Ochre (which is probably about 3-4 shades “up” (i.e. darker) from this little sample of Nude.  Funny though, when I got Sephora IQ’d for foundations, LM Nude was supposedly a match for me; turned out it was too light. The formulation of this is quite similar to my oil-free version (honestly, I can’t really tell a difference in finish; just colour). BUT – when I mix  a bit of the Radiance Bronzer with this, I can get a pretty decent match for my skintone. Not perfect though… I may have to pass this one on to one of my fairer-skinned friends!

Mini Lip Glacé in Nectar: Omigosh, probably my favourite item in this kit!  This gloss glides on so smooth and smells like candy. It’s a beautiful, sheer peach/coral colour that is perfect for summer (and for all year round, really). It doesn’t feel sticky and actually keeps my lips feeling pretty moisturized. It’s sheer, but can be built up a little.  Very tempted to try out another colour! Or picking up a full-size of Nectar once this one runs out. Which may be possible because this hasn’t left my purse since I got it!

Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Bronze 03:  Loving this baked powder. I wasn’t quite sure how to use this product — is it a blush? a bronzer? a highlighter?  Apparently, after reading a few reviews, it’s all of the above! This comes in 4 shades and Bronze 03 is (luckily) recommended for medium skin, which suits me perfect. I’ve used this to warm up my face and also as a blush for a bronze, natural look. This powder is silky smooth and matte. I haven’t tried this yet, but I’m almost certain this would look great as an eyeshadow too.  Love the texture and I will definitely be using this to take my face from blah to yah!

L to R: Radiance Baked Powder in Bronze 03; Lip Glace in Nectar; Face Polish; Foundation Primer Radiance Bronze; Tinted Moiturizer in Nude

Overall, I am very happy with the products I recieved in this kit. Other than the tinted moisturizer, I know I will probably get a lot of use out of the rest of the products.

Have you recieved this kit or have you tried any of the products in it?  What do you like/dislike?

Beauty Blender and Solid Blender Cleanser

Wow. Just a taaaaaad late on the Beauty Blender bandwagon, I am!  But I’m finally on and I totally see why people go crazy for this cute little egg-shaped thing.

I was lucky enough to recieve this set — the Beauty Blender and a mini Solid Blender Cleanser in my March Birchbox.

I’m pretty much banking on the idea that MOST of you, if not all of you reading this have already at least heard of the BB and maybe have even used it.  I know I’ve become pretty ‘UGH!’ whenever I read or hear things about the BB but now I know exactly why people rave about it.

Used dampened, this little tool applies liquid and cream products to my face like a dream!  I have yet to find a formula that doesn’t apply well with the BB. I’ve used it with matte foundations, dewy foundations, and tinted moisturizers. Using the BB to apply these, gives me a seamless nearly flawless coverage. I use a light bouncing motion to apply my base and swipe lightly around my hairline and jawline to blend into those areas seamlessly.

I’ve used this to apply concealer under my eyes — smoothes out like no finger or brush can!

I’ve also used this to apply cream blush. Wow. Absolutely makes harsh lines disappear and allows for a sheer, natural looking coverage.

I have to say… this has put my foundation makeup brushes to sleep for longer than usual! I can definitely justify the $26 Cdn this costs now. Would I purchase if/when the one I have finally breaks down?  YES!

And as for the Solid Blender Cleaner. This little soap cleans the BB so easily and thoroughly. It smells like lavender.  Yes.  I believe a regular size of this soap sells at Sephora for $20 Cdn. Would I buy when my little sample size runs out. YES!

I give the Beauty Blender and Solid Blender Cleanser: a STANDING OVATION

Have you tried the BB?  What do you think of it?
