Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick

Hey Pretties!

I was super excited to try out the new Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss lipsticks when they hit the drugstore. I’m a huge fan of the Revlon Lip Butters (of which I’m going out on a limb to say that were the inspiration for the Almay versions) — both products have similar packaging, similar names and similar claims. I wanted to stack up my love for the Revlon against the Almay!

What’s different and neat about the Almay lipsticks is that they have developed the line for three common skin tones:  Light, Light/Medium, and Medium. And within each of those skintones, they’ve come up with, I suppose, the four most common “colour families” of lipstick shades that would suit those specific skintones.

So for example, under the Light skintone line there is one Berry, one Pink, one Nude and one Red lipstick that will presumably look great on anyone with that skintone. And as with the Light/Medium and Medium ranges, there is one lipstick for each of those colours also. It’s like a fool-proof system in finding the best shade under those colour categories without having to try on a mess of shades!

I decided to buy and try the Nude lipstick under the Light/Medium skintone range — #70:

The formula of this lipstick is awesome. Super hydrating and glides on very smoothly on the lips. I’ve worn this on top of chapstick and also without. Even with slightly drier lips, this went on smooth and provided a pretty good dose of moisture. It’s a semi-sheer formula with a semi-glossy finish — with one swipe it gives a very minimal wash of colour; personally I like to build it up for a more intense colour but it still looks quite natural. It feels like a gloss but has a coverage of a lipstick. Very comfortable on the lips, not sticky whatsoever. The lasting power is pretty decent — on bare lips (without chapstick) this definitely stays on longer (5-6 hours wear without much eating, drinking, etc.)

The colour of this one? For me, I think I actually hit the JACKPOT of MLBBs (my lips but better). I feel like this shade looks amazing on my lips; really enhances the natural colour of my lips with a hint of deep pink/warm brown.  I really love the colour on my lips; it’s quickly made a permanent spot in my makeup bag for everyday wear. This makes me want to try the Berry, Pink and Red shades under the Light/Medium range — if the Nude shade suits me THIS well, I’m banking on the chance that the others will too!

Very impressive lipstick from Almay — I really recommend that you check out your drugstore to find a shade that’s right for you!

I purchased the Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss lipstick for $8.99 Cdn.

Review Re-do: Almay One Coat Get Up and Grow Mascara — Waterproof Formula

Hey Pretties!

I wanted to do a mini-post on something I like to call a “Review Re-do”. If you recall, about five months ago I did a review on the Almay Get Up and Grow Mascara – click HERE to read that full review.

I gave the mascara a very good rating (HIGH FIVE) on it’s performance overall EXCEPT for the fact that the formula was terrible in that it was the worst for smudging! I did say in my post that I was trying out their non-waterproof formula, whereas I tend to always buy waterproof over non — at the time they didn’t have the waterproof formula.

BUT! I found it! And guess what?  I am completely in love with the Almay One Coat Get Up and Grow Mascara (sort of, again!!)

This does NOT smudge or budge off my lashes until I take them off with my Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. Love!  All the good things I said about the non-waterproof version is EXACTLY the same with this one — with the added bonus now of no smudging!

So, though technically this is not the exact same product — tweak in formula — I thought it deserved a review re-do to let you know how happy I am to have found probably one of the best drugstore mascaras out there.

I purchase this on sale at SDM for $6.99 Cdn.

Almay One Coat Get Up and Grow Mascara

Hello Pretties!

Mascara, mascara, mascara… I can’t get enough of mascara. When my friend Jen recommended this one to me one afternoon, I ran to the drugstore and bought it. Yes, I’m a sucker like that. But I’m glad I did because the Almay One Coat Get Up and Grow Mascara is a great addition to my growing mascara collection!

On the Almay website, this mascara is described as follows:

Brush fits eye contours perfectly so that you reach every last lash in just one coat. Clump free, extra gentle formula is safe even for sensitive eyes.

pro vitamin formula

  • instantly longer looking lashes
  • anti-breakage pro-vitamin formula defends against damage so lashes become their longest
  • unique brush shape fits eye contours perfectly to reach every last lash
  • clump free, all day wear
  • ophthalmologist tested
  • suitable for contact lens wearers

I picked this up at SDM, regularly priced at $9.99. The shade I chose was Blackest Black. To my dismay, I did not find a waterproof version (I always go for waterproof formulas) but I let it slide this time because I really wanted to try this mascara out.

First off, I was super impressed with the pigmentation of this mascara; probably one of the blackest mascaras I’ve tried yet. The brush design is perfectly shaped — not too big, not too small — to really help to build up the length and volume of my lashes.

With this mascara, there’s really no need to use more than 2 coats (for me anyway), otherwise your lashes might begin to look a little clumpy. When they say “one coat” they mean “one coat”! I usually do 2 coats maximum and it gives me enough coverage for long, voluminous lashes.

This mascara holds my curl pretty well — which is super impressive, because even though I use an eyelash curler every single time before applying any mascara, usually by the end of the day, my lashes have lost their curl. After a full day of wearing the Almay, I still look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed!

The only negative thing I have to say about this mascara, is that it smudges like a mofo. Maybe because it’s a non-waterproof formula and I’m so used to wearing waterproof formulas that I barely ever experience smudging. Upside is that it DOES NOT flake, but smudging, yes — when I rub my eyes/lashes, it gets all over under my eyes or on my eyelids and it’s crazy black. I mean, nothing that a little water or emergency eye makeup remover can’t fix, but still, a bit of a bummer. With that said, however, the non-waterproof formula strangely enough, stays on quite well with regards to whatever is left on my lashes. Even after a smudge-a-roo, the coating on my lashes is still black as black. Thumbs up to that.

The claims it makes in terms of helping to reduce breakage, strengthen and make lashes longer, are still unknown to me as I haven’t been using this mascara for too long. I’m not even really banking on those claims… who really knows? If it happens, it happens — bonus. What I do love about it is the colour saturation, volume and length that it delivers with every application.

I give the Almay One Coat Get up and Grow mascara: a HIGH FIVE
