Ok, so right off the hop I’m going to say that this foundation might very well be my favourite drugstore foundation EVER. For those of you who’ve been following my blog for some time, you all know that I am a drugstore foundation junkie – just browse through my reviews and you’ll see that I’ve probably tried the majority of drugstore foundations out there!

I have many that I really like, however, the L’oreal True Match LUMI foundation knocks all of them off my shelf!

For someone who doesn’t want crazy full coverage but just enough to even out skintone with light to medium coverage, this is exactly what this does for me.  Typically my skin type is combination (oily T-zone, normal to dry perimeter), but in the colder months, the dryness creeps up all over.  This foundation is perfect for drier skintypes in my opinion, but even with an oily T-zone some days, this works perfect for me too.

This definitely gives a very natural, luminous finish and looks like my skin but 100 times better.  I love the slight dewiness it gives me and a youthful, fresh glow it leaves.  I’ve applied this with both a flat-top foundation brush and a beauty blender and both techniques leave a beautiful, seamless finish.  It does not settle into my fine lines. Although it doesn’t cover up everything (i.e. age spots) I don’t mind — the overall finish I get on my entire face with this product is amazing.

After using this foundation, I will set my face with face powder to tone down any over-dewiness and keep the foundation in place.  As far as wear time, on me, this lasts a good 6-7 hours I’d say, before I see some sort of fading  — typical of most foundations.

Really, this foundation is number one for me right now!  I’m curious to see how this works on my more combo skin once the warmer months start.  And bonus – this has got SPF 20 in it which doesn’t interfere with the finish or colour of the foundation (i.e. no whitecast, no strong SPF smell or stinging around the eyes, like some SPF products can result in.)

And I think a big part of why I’m loving this foundation so much is the colour match – W5 Sand Beige is hands down, probably the best drugstore foundation shade match I’ve discovered in years!!  (The L’oreal True Match range is actually awesome for the amount of shades they carry to cater from fair to deep skintones).  I have a feeling that even in the summer months, this will still be OK for my slightly oiler skin – and the colour selection is so good that going up to a 5.5 or 6 will probably work out great for me.

I already know, this will be a drugstore foundation option I will continue to go back to many many times!  Possibly even the ONLY drugstore foundation I will continue to repurchase from now on – whoa!

I give the L’oreal True Match LUMI foundation SPF 20: a STANDING OVATION

bareMinerals bareSkin Perfecting Veil

So, I’ve been craving to buy my holy grail setting powder — M.A.C. Mineralize Skin Finish Natural — because I think I used up my last compact more than 2 years ago.  In the meantime, I’ve been playing around with drugstore powder options and they’ve been OK, but nothing comparable to the M.A.C.  I felt like splurging a little on a new pressed powder but instead of the M.A.C., I decided to try out the bareMinerals bareSkin Perfecting Veil (picked this up during the Sephora VIB sale!)

On the Sephora website:

What it is:
A weightless, brightening finishing powder that blurs the appearance of fine lines.

What it does:
This utterly weightless finishing powder is formulated with light-reflecting optics to help diffuse the look of fine lines. Infused with lilac plant stems cells and vitamin C, it helps to brighten up the complexion, and a special blend of minerals absorbs excess oil and balances the skin’s texture.

I was mainly interested in this powder because I figured if the M.A.C. mineral one worked so well on my skin to give me a smooth, blurred finish, I expected that this mineral powder would give me the same effect.

I have to say that this comes pretty darn close to my beloved M.A.C. powder!  This definitely gives me the same coverage without looking cakey whatsoever.  It sets my makeup well leaving my skin with a very natural, flawless looking finish. I don’t even feel like I’m wearing any powder after putting this on. For oil-control, I’d say a good 5-6 hours until my nose starts to look a little shiny, but the rest of my face seems to stay pretty oil-free for a good 8 hours.

I don’t mean to compare, but I do notice that the bareMinerals powder tends to look ever so slightly more powdery that the M.A.C., and less glowy on the skin. But only ever so slightly!

The compact itself is a sleek looking round black case with a magnetic closure.  It’s got a puff and a mirror that’s great for touch-ups throughout the day.

I’m really loving this powder and it’s got me interested in trying more products from bareMinerals!  Do you have any suggestions?

This is at Sephora for $31 Cdn (I picked mine up for $24.80 during the VIB sale). A few bucks cheaper than the M.A.C. powder at $37 Cdn.

I give the bareMinerals bareSkin Perfecting Veil: a HIGH FIVE.

fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15

I’ve had my eye on the fresh Sugar Lip Treatment balms for long time but cringed at the $26 Cdn price point. But with the 20% off sale at Sephora earlier this year, I figured it would be a good time for me to try it out without feeling too cringe-y about the price.

The tint I chose was Passion – a sheer crimson red shade.  The fresh Sugar Lip Treatment range has about 13 colours.

On the Sephora website:

What it is:
A bestselling lip treatment—and a cult-favorite among all who try it, including Hollywood’s elite—that moisturizes, protects, and smooths the lips.

What it is formulated to do:
Sugar Lip Treatment blends repairative oils and waxes with real sugar, a natural humectant, for delectable and dependable moisture. Sweet and tart black currant oil, rich in plumping essential fatty acids, cushions the lips while antioxidant grapeseed polyphenols and vitamins A, C, and E provide protection from wrinkle-causing free radicals.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
– Parabens
– Sulfates
– Phthalates

What else you need to know:
This lip-loving essential has a bright, citrus scent and is free of petroleum, mineral oil, and lanolin.

I might get some back lash here, but I really have to be honest – I don’t see what all the hype is all about around these lip balms.  Sure, they come in beautiful, “luxe” packaging and I really am impressed — I’m a sucker for pretty looking products.  But as far as performance goes?  I’d pick my Blistex pot over this any day.

Sure, it moisturizes my lips and keeps them comfortable, but it’s all just so basic. If anything, the formula is actually a tad too thin for my liking — this might just be a personal preference, but I like my lip balms to have some ‘balls’ to them, some stick, if you know what I mean. I put the fresh lip balm on and I feel like I have to touch up every half hour or so to feel like I have product on.

The shade of Passion is one I really like — a sheer red shade that’s actually great for someone like me who likes to wear red, but sometimes can be shy about it.  Before I even tried the balm, I had such high expectations for it.  I walked out of Sephora with the Passion shade and was already planning my next trip to pick up the more natural, Honey shade.

Well, I won’t be taking that trip anytime soon.

Another downside, is how soft the formula is. Wow, keep this in your pocket for any amount of time and you’re pretty much in for a melted mess.  This is one lip balm I would never consider taking on a hot holiday or even keeping in my makeup bag during the summer time.

I will continue to use this (for the price alone) but aside from the pretty packaging, the formula just doesn’t cut it for me.  I’ll be more than happy to spend $3 on my pot-o-Blistex over this any day.

I give the fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15: a SHOULDER SHRUG

UPDATE!! – I found a very similar product to this fresh Balm at the drugstore – the new CoverGirl Colourlicious Oh Sugar! Vitamin Infused Balm.  I would go far as say this is a DUPE for the fresh Balm and works even better!!  I picked up 2 shades and they’ve bumped my fresh Balm aside!  Review on the Covergirl product coming soon!!
