September 2015 Birchbox (Canada)

It’s that time of month again!

Here’s a peek into the September Birchbox (Canada) I received (and mini-reviews on the products I’ve tried out!)

This box though!

September 2015 Birchbox (Canada).  This box though!

How cute is this box?  It made me smile when I saw the message!

And inside:

TOCCA Esfoliante da Corpo – Giulietta:  This is such a wonderful body scrub!  It’s a sugar-based formula that has just the right amount of grittiness to slough away dry skin without it being too harsh.  I’ve used this on my elbows and heels in the shower and it works awesome! The scent is slightly floral and fruity (pink tulips and green apple) and so fresh!  It’s rich in natural oils like olive, safflower and grapeseed oil that help to nourish the skin while getting rid of the dead dry stuff!

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Liquid Liner in Dark Gray:  I’m probably the worst person at applying liquid liner, but this pen makes things quite easy!  It’s got a long brush tip and the product comes out pigmented, smooth and doesn’t skip. It’s in dark gray – a good alternative however for something less intense than a really black liner. Staying power of this is, meh —  will come off with some face cleanser and warm water.

POP Beauty Portfolio Eyeshadow Trio in Sugar Plum:  These POP shadows are pretty amazing!  The shadows feel buttery and have minimal to zero fall-out!  The colours are perfect for brown eyes and a great colour palette for an easy, everyday eye look.  We’ve got a white, shimmery highlight shade; a medium-toned, satin-finish plum shade; and a satin-finish dark gray shade with purple undertone that pairs perfectly with the plum shadow.

100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream:  This caffeine rich eye cream claims to de-puff, brighten dark circles, lessen lines and wrinkles and nourish the eye area with anti-aging nutrients. I have not tried this, but I will be passing this one on to my sister as she’s been looking for an eye cream to try out. All I can tell you… is that this stuff smells amazing!!  Like a sweet, coffee, caramel latte!

BioRepublic Skincare Pomegranate Crush Illuminating Sheet Mask:  If you know me, you know I love face masks!  This mask claims to brighten skin and even tone. It’s a sheet mask and apparently it’s biodegradable.  Like other sheet masks, you leave this on for 15-20 minutes, remove, and massage/tap the excess product left into your skin.  I’ve yet to try this one, but I’m sure it’s a gooder!

There you have it!  Pretty happy with my September Birchbox 🙂

And to top it off, I also received at 20% off voucher to use on any full-size product from the Birchbox website – woohoo!

Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation and Concealer

Like I need anymore foundation or concealer.

But for review purposes and for my own addiction, I couldn’t stay away from one of  newer foundation/concealer releases from the drugstore — Maybelline Superstay Better Skin foundation and concealer.

On the Maybelline website (about the foundation):

Longwear foundation that improves skin’s appearance every minute you’re in it.  With the antioxidant power of Actyl-C, a more durable form of vitamin C.  For all skin types. Medium to full coverage.

Superstay Better Skin Foundation gives an all-day flawless coverage and better-looking skin in 3 weeks. The foundation reduces the appearance of spots, dullness and uneveness and gives you a brighter, more even and stress-free skin.

The foundation comes in 12 shades and the concealer comes in 6 shades, ranging from very light to tan/dark.

I ended up picking up the shade 85 Sun Beige in the foundation and Medium in the concealer. At first glance, a lot of the lighter foundation shades look to have quite pink undertones and the medium/darker shades have more neutral undertones.  Unfortunately for someone who has yellow undertones like me, drugstore foundations don’t typically cater to me (MAC NC40 for reference). I was pleasantly surprised however, that 85 Sun Beige ended up pulling ever so slightly yellow once it set on my face.

Let’s talk about formula. So this foundation is supposed to actually improve the look and texture of your skin after 3 weeks of wear. I can’t attest to this claim as I’ve only been wearing this for a week or so and just couldn’t wait to review!

The texture of this foundation is actually very nice — a light, liquid, almost gel-like texture. Very easy to blend out on the skin. I’ve tried applying this with both a brush and beauty blender and it applies well, although I like the more natural finish it gives with the beauty blender.

The foundation gives a light to medium coverage, but I think this can be built up to a fuller coverage if that’s what you’re looking for. As you can tell from the swatches, the foundation is slightly more watery in texture compared to the concealer. The foundation gives me a satin-matte finish on the skin and the concealer gives more of a matte finish, without looking flat or cakey.

I like that the foundation has a pump — less messy and controlled amount means less waste!

Lasting power of the foundation?  I’d say a good 9-10 hours. I find that it seems to control my oil quite well. I would say it oxidizes just a smidgen but not so much that it makes me look too off. I really like how this foundation looks upon application and how it wears through the day.

The concealer is medium to full coverage and lasts up to 6 hours (under my eyes and around my nose, but maybe that’s because I tend to touch those parts of my face throughout the day). Setting this with a light dusting of powder prevents creasing or settling into my fine lines. I like this concealer, but I don’t love it.

In comparison with the ever-so-popular Maybelline FitMe Matte + Poreless Foundation, I think I prefer this Maybelline foundation better. It lasts longer, it give a bit more fuller coverage, it feels like nothing on the skin and it wears nice through out the day.

I give the Maybelline Better Skin foundation and concealer both: a HIGH FIVE

Clinique Cheek Pop Blush in Ginger Pop

I’ve been wanting to get my grubby little paws on this blush for a long time now and I finally did!  The Clinique Cheek Pop blushes come in 12 shades and I chose Ginger Pop as my first one — a warm, bright, deep coral.

On the Sephora website, it’s description as follows:

What it is:
A long-wearing, buildable cheek color that imparts a bright hue.

What it does:
Discover pure, natural cheek color that looks virtually powderless. Its unique, patented technology transforms pure liquid pigment into a smooth, silky powder through a process of slow baking, leaving true color—from compact to cheeks. This silky smooth, stay-true formula creates a vibrant, healthy-looking glow without a trace of powder residue.

Firstly, let’s talk about the packaging — how cute, right?  I’d love to build a collection of these blushes just based on how they look!

The formula of the Cheek Pop is quite unique. When I first swatched this in Sephora, my fingers didn’t know what exactly to make of it — felt like a mousse AND soft like silk AND powdery all at the same time. It was very easy to swatch — just a couple swirls on my finger and I got quite a decent amount of pigment.

This blush picks up very well with a blusher brush — with about 3-4 swirls, I get a good amount of blush to start a good flush going on both my cheeks. This blush is definitely buildable and you can’t really screw it up. It’s pigmented but I find that you can’t really go overboard straight away, which is a good thing because it allows you to have control over the application. This definitely gives you a flush on your cheeks like it’s coming from the inside out — very natural yet noticeable.

Ginger Pop is a bright coral shade that just screamed to me off the shelf. I tend to reach for more peach/coral/gold tones in the summer time when it comes to blush as it plays well with my skintone and dark hair.

Throughout the summer, I reached for this quite often. But now that we’re heading fast into autumn and winter, I think this shade has enough warmth and depth to it that it would be a great peachy option for the fall/winter months!

As for the lasting power, I would say this lasts pretty good — 7 hours of wear time before I notice my cheeks looking a little dull.

At $24 Cdn a “pop” (haha) for this blush, I can certainly point out a few much cheaper alternatives that last just as long (or longer) and/or give off the same amount of pigment and colour. But the formula of Clinique’s Cheek Pops are like nothing I’ve tried or owned, I think this was a good investment!

I give the Clinique Cheek Pop blush in Ginger Pop: a STANDING OVATION

Have you tried the Cheek Pops?  Like or dislike?  What colours do you have?
