Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-free

For those of you who’ve been reading my blog for a while, knows that probably 99% of my reviews and buys are on drugstore beauty products. But I’ve been wanting to step up my game a bit, so I’ve made a few investments in recent months on some higher-end products, like the Laura Mercier Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder  and the Urban Decay Naked Flushed Blush Palette.  My most recent purchase is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-free.

With warmer weather on the way, I’ve been on the hunt for something new to try in terms of bases and I thought now would be the perfect time to finally try out the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, which almost everyone seems to love.

According to the Sephora website:

A perfect blend of skincare and makeup that helps control oil-breakthrough and gives skin a sheer hint of color for a healthy, natural glow.

What it does: This lightweight formula provides ideal protection from the sun’s harmful, damaging rays with broad spectrum SPF 20 UVB/UVA sunscreen. It also controls oil-breakthrough with hydration to prevent dryness and soften and ease fine, dry lines. An antioxidant complex of vitamins C and E acts as a free radical scavenger to protect the skin from even the most aggressive effects of the environment, all while extremely long-wearing color stays true and wears evenly in a natural, semi-matte finish. Non-comedogenic and dermatologist- and allergy-tested to minimize the risk of irritation, it is perfect for all skin types, including sensitive ones.

Initially, I purchased the LM Tinted Moisturizer for normal skin in the shade Bisque (matched up with Sephora’s Colour IQ). It was an OK match, but I felt like I could go with something a bit darker. Also, I found the formula a tad bit too dewy for my liking. So I went back to Sephora and the sales associate helped to colour match me to the LM Oil-free version in the shade Ochre — a much better colour match as it was slightly darker and more yellow-toned.

I love this formula. It’s lightweight AND provides just enough coverage to even out my skintone, without making me look like I’m wearing a heavy base. The oil-free formula is not completely matte — it leaves me with a semi-dewy finish that I really really like because it almost mimics the way the texture of my skin looks without any makeup on; just more even toned.

I’ve tried this on with a primer and without; honestly I prefer it without a primer underneath — weird huh? But awesome because it can save me a step! I’ve tried applying this with a Beauty Blender sponge and a foundation buffing brush — both give pretty much the same finish. Application is pretty quick — blends easily and seamlessly.

Although this is oil-free, by no means would I call this a matte formula (of which most tinted moisturizers aren’t designed to be anyway). In comparison with the orginal LM tinted moisturizer for normal skin I purchased, the LM oil-free is only slightly less dewy, but still much better for my combo skin. I find that setting my T-Zone with the LM Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder or my Revlon Nearly Naked pressed powder is enough to get me through about 5 hours until I have to touch up again.

As far as lasting power, I would say the LM is pretty typical of a tinted moisturizer — doesn’t hold up like a true foundation would. But that’s not a big deal to me… by the time I get home from work all I want to do is just remove my makeup anyway — 8-9 hours of any makeup on my skin, I’m ready to get out the Bioderma!

Overall, I am really happy with this product. My most expensive face base purchased yet — $56 Cdn — I think I made a great investment. I should also note that the size of this is 50ml as opposed to the standard 30ml you typically get with foundations, tinted moisturizers, etc. So, a bit of a bonus and validation for the price!

I would probably repurchase this product, but I’m hoping to make the tube last because dishing out another $56 any time soon on this would be a bit cray!

So far I’m in love with the two products from LM that I have… already doing some research on what LM product I want to purchase next!

I give the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil-free: a STANDING OVATION

Have you tried this product?  Like or dislike?

Thanks for reading!

  1. I just swatched this at the beauty counter, but it didn’t convince me, although I was very willing to buy. Probably I was expecting a more mat finish and a little more coverage…
