May Favourites!: The Body Shop Coconut Body Mist; Aveeno Positively Radiant Toner; Sally Hershberger Finishing Cream; and Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Glow Powder

I’ve been at this blog for 4 months now and I just realized I have never done a Monthly Favourites post. So here’s my first instalment for the month of May!

Each month I will pick ONE item (eek, only one??!!) to thumbs up or thumbs down for you in the following categories: Skin, Face, Body, Hair. I’ll also throw in a Random favourite (non-beauty related) if there’s something I feel like I must must must share with you!

Aveeno Positively Radiant Toner

Aveeno Positively Radiant Toner

It’s hard to find an alcohol-free toner and when I stumbled across this one, I snatched it up right away. I’ve had good experience with the Aveeno Positively Radiant Day and Night Lotion (click here to read my review on those); I had never thought to give the toner a try before. Glad I did. Toning is a step that most people “don’t have time for” — I was one of those! But since using this toner and others in the last 3 months, I can appreciate how a good toner can “prep” my skin before layering on all the other good skincare stuff. The Aveeno Positively Radiant toner is very gentle, does not dry out my skin, and leaves my face with an extra boost of freshness after cleansing.

I purchased this on sale at SDM for $7.99. I give the Aveeno Positively Radiant Toner: a HIGH FIVE

Sonia Kashuck Chic Luminosity Glow Powder

Sonia Kashuck Chic Luminosity Glow Powder

This powder was a recent purchase for me, about 2 weeks ago I’d say, but I think it deserves its’ spot in my May Favourites! This powder is stark white but with a few swirls onto my big, fluffy kabuki brush and a sweep across my entire face, this powder sets my makeup with translucency and a certain glow and radiance. I love this powder!

I purchased this on sale at Target for $12.99. I give the Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Glow Powder: a STANDING OVATION

The Body Shop Coconut Body Mist

The Body Shop Coconut Body Mist

Ok. Who doesn’t love the smell of coconuts? During the warmer months, I love spritzing this onto my pulse points and in my hair for a whiff of coconutty goodness! Being a body spray, the scent does not linger that long, but well enough for a few hours. I believe this comes in an Eau de Toilette/Parfum version, which I would assume have longer staying power. But for a light spritz of scent in the warmer months, this is my go-to scent for the summer!

I purchased this on sale for $6 (regular price $12) at The Body Shop. I give The Body Shop Coconut Body Mist: a HIGH FIVE

Sally Hershberger Finishing Cream for Wavy Hair

Sally Hershberger Finishing Cream for Wavy Hair

Many people don’t know that I have naturally wavy hair as I’ve made it a habit to straighten my hair almost every day for the last fifteen-some years. Problem is, my hair isn’t “nice” wavy; it’s “weird” wavy, and most times even when I want to leave it au natural, it just looks like a messy, wavy-ish, curly-ish monster of freaky looking something on top of my head. This wave cream, however, helps to de-frizz the waves and somewhat makes my hair look normal enough that I can go out in public. A little bit of this goes a long way — about a pea-size rubbed between my hands and then smoothed over my waves, gets rid of flyaways and gives definition to sections of waves/curls. It does not weigh my fine/thin hair down (a big plus), it leaves a very nice sheen (not greasy) shine to my hair and it’s really great for sectioning out the waves for definition. AND it smells like a tropical island — of mostly coconuts! So good. Sometimes, I’ll even smooth this over my freshly straightened hair to get rid of flyaways too.

No word of a lie, I probably purchased this tube about 4 years ago and it’s only halfway done (granted I don’t use it everyday). But well worth the $12.99 (I think?) that I paid for it at SDM. Unfortunately, I think they may have discontinued this product — I’ve been searching for it for the last few months and cannot find it anywhere! Bummer for that.

I give the Sally Hershberger Wave Cream: a STANDING OVATION

Stocking footsies! Not sure what they're formally called, but whatever!

Stocking footsies! Not sure what they’re formally called, but whatever!

This is completely random but I had to share. I get really sweaty feet in the summer time and these have saved me from leaving sweaty footprints on any floor I step on. I have a few variations of these: I have them in nude and black which is great depending on what colour ballerina flats I’m wearing. They just make wearing flats a bit more comfortable for me. I also have some that don’t go up as high over my toes, to prevent them from showing. I think I have about 6 pairs of these funny looking things. I love them! I got these particular ones from Winners — a 3-pack for $5.99 — what a steal! But you can find variations of these footsies in any department store or mall.

What will my June favourites be?  I don’t know!!  We’ll both find out next month!

Me? Nominated?! For the Very Inspiring Blogger Award! Yahoo!!

Hello Pretties!

This is an extra exciting post for me today, as I’ve been so kindly nominated for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award by gretalinbeauty (Thanks Greta!!). If you haven’t checked out this sweetie’s blog, go do it now! Who woulda thought anyone would be reading my blog, let alone be nominated for this cute and amazing honor!? I am so flattered!

I started this blog simply because I wanted to combine my love of writing, being a chatterbox and my addiction to beauty products. I’ve always loved to write — wanting to be a writer of some kind (author, poet, journalist, editor, etc.) since I was a very young girl. Since that dream didn’t pan out, I found blogging a great way to feed that need!

At 37 years old, my love/obsession/addiction to skincare and beauty products only began in the last couple years — and has now grown into me sharing my honest opinions on almost everything I try! I mostly blog for myself — finding joy in writing and just trying out new products! Realizing now that I’ve reached out to friends, family and other AWESOME and INSPIRING beauty bloggers is a bonus and such an amazing compliment! Each and every one of YOU inspires ME to keep on with this blog!

I thank you, thank you, thank you for being here with me!

So. There’s a few things that come with being nominated for this award. First, the rules:

  1. Thank and link the amazing person who nominated you
  2. List the rules and display the award
  3. Share seven facts about yourself
  4. Nominate fifteen other amazing blogs and comment on their posts to let them know they have been nominated
  5. Optional: Proudly display the award logo on your blog and follow the blogger who nominated you

Rules 1 and 2 done!

7 Facts about me:

  • I live with my boyfriend and cat in a very cool, heritage 1920’s apartment near the river. We are a happy little family.
  • My favourite season is Autumn.
  • I try very hard to stay physicially and nutritionally fit. I get up three times a week at 5am to make it to my 6am workout class. And go for long walks around my neighbourhood when the weather is right. I never diet — I simply make healthy eating a big part of my lifestyle each and every day. But sometimes, this belly’s just gotta have her ice cream, potato chips and pizza! And believe me… I do!
  • I watch enormous amounts of television serieses on Netflix. But I balance that out with indulging in a good book or two at the same time.
  • I am very close to my immediate family — they’re the best people in my life.
  • Like Greta, I am obsessed with cats! I love them all! Please come live with me, all you cats! I will have bathtubs full of catnip for you and neverending chin rubs!
  • I sleep on my stomach.

Dammit, only seven facts… this is fun! I could go on and on. But maybe that’s a good thing that I don’t, haha!

And now for MY nominations! I don’t have 15, but the ones I list below are the Pretties that I admire and enjoy reading everytime they come out with a new post!! I follow many more non-beauty bloggers, but I thought I’d focus on these ladies today.

The following are the reasons why I am nominating these ladies and why I adore them all so much:

  • Honest to goodness product reviews
  • A great variety of beauty and fashion posts
  • Great writing styles – engaging, entertaining and informative
  • Awesome photography
  • On top of trends, in the know of what’s new, and even info on less popular products
  • A good mix of drugstore and high-end makeup/skincare reviews
  • Real women, with real good blogs!!

And the nominees are…

Rachel’s Beauty Bites

You ladies rock!  Thanks again, Greta, for nominating me! I’ll keep doing my best to keep on with my reviews.. knowing that you and many others are diggin’ it so far is “very inspiring” to me!!

Thanks for tuning in Pretties!!

Skincare Review: Hydraluron, Pepta-Bright and Retinol Reface by Indeed Labs

Hello Pretties!

If you read my morning and nighttime skincare routine posts, there were a few products that I promised to do a combined review on — Hydraluron, Pepta-Bright and Retinol Reface by Indeed Labs. So here it is!

From L to R: Retinol Reface, Hydraluron and Pepta-Bright

From L to R: Retinol Reface, Hydraluron and Pepta-Bright

This gel-serum is very coveted in the beauty blogosphere that I could not NOT try this out. And you know what? I’m glad I picked it up because I think it’s performed really well for me after about 2 months of use. Essentially this contains hyluronic acid, an ingredient that holds 1,000 times its weight in water. That means that when you put this on your face before you put on your moisturizer, it makes your moisturizer “stick” better to your face and makes it work better, by adding that extra boost of hydration to your skin.

This right off the bat plumps up my skin and makes it super soft. This has restored the moisture in my skin, better than if I had continued to use my moisturizer alone. This doesn’t really have a smell to it and the consistency is a transparent light gel formula. I usually use one pea-size drop for my face after using Pepta-Bright and right before my moisturizer.

I know that there are Hydraluron sheet masks available – curious to try those.

This is a cream/serum formulation — very light and easily absorbed into my skin. About a pea-size drop is enough for my entire face. This product claims to even skintone, lighten hyperpigmentation, promote radiance, prevent formation of future dark spots and more. I’ve been using this for a couple months now and I really don’t see much of a difference. I think the trick with this one is to continue on with the product for a longer period of time to see changes.

It has a slight weird smell, sort of a faint chemical smell, but nothing that offends or lingers around for too long.

Retinol Reface

Retinol is a form of vitamin A and is considered one of the best anti-aging ingredients you can put on your skin. Retinol can help to diminish fine lines, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. It can also help to minimize pore size, unclogs pores, helps with acne and improves overall skintone. As we age, collegen, which are the building blocks of our skin, break down. Using retinol speeds up the skin’s cell turnover which naturally slows down as we get older.

I’ve incorporated this product into my p.m. routine for the last couple months and using it only in the evening. The first time I used it, I broke out in a couple spots on my chin. (They say there is some adjustment period for some people to get used to the retinol – can cause redness, dry patches, breakouts, etc. at first but with longer time use, skin will adapt and less side effects). No big deal. I continued on with using it every other night for the first week and then every night since then with no issues.

This has no smell and is a light lotion formula that absorbs super fast and easy into the skin. Retinol is considered one of those anti-ageing ingredients that is most effective over long-term use. I will continue to use this product (and maybe try out other retinol products in the future) to ensure I reap the benefits of this anti-aging powerhouse ingredient!

Top to bottom: Pepta-Bright, Retinol Reface, Hydraluron

I believe all Indeed Lab products are currently exclusive to Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada. I give all three products HIGH FIVES!

Have you tried any of these Indeed Lab products?  How about their other products?  Did you like/dislike them?
