Beauty Product Review: Maybelline Mascara Madness!

Hello Pretties!

If there’s one makeup item that I’ve always had in makeup stash, it would be mascara. Before this post, I had a quick scan of my mascara collection — spotting a good two (or three) handfuls of products from elf, L’oreal, Covergirl and Dior — and I noticed that the majority of my mascara stash is mainly by Maybelline. I do rotate between ALL my mascaras on a daily basis, however, these ones are currently getting the most play:

Maybelline Madness! (L to R: Falsies Big Eyes; the Rocket; the Colossal, the Colossal Cat Eyes; the Colossal Volume Express

Quick synopsis of my own lashes: medium to long length, sparse lower lashes, I tend to buy waterproof formulas, and I love my lashes to look thick and voluminous.

This mascara caught my eye (hee hee.. “eye”) because I found it very unique that it had an extra wand specifically made for doing your lower lashes. Now, if you’re like me, lower lashes look pretty much non-existent without anything on them to help bring out the little buggers. But with this small, skinny brush — whoa mama, my lower lashes are reborn! I know Clinique makes a lower lash mascara for about $12 I think and I was about to indulge in it, as I’ve heard many good reviews about it. But when I stumbled across the Maybelline Big Eyes for around $6 on sale, I thought I’d give it a go — 2 mascaras in 1 for half the price of the Clinique.

The lower lash brush is skinny and straight. It really separates my lower lashes and application is easy — I find I don’t get smudges under my eyes as I would with a regular mascara brush. Sometimes I’ll even use it to give my upper lashes a bit more of a boost on the outer lashes, as I find this tiny brush is really effective at separating the lashes.

The upper lash brush has a unique twisted sort of shape — you know how they illustrate DNA strands? Well, kinda like that. It’s probably the shape of this brush that makes my lashes really big — as the name “falsies” would suggest. Not to the point where they look fake, but very noticeable and voluminous. The formula is buildable and I don’t find clumping an issue. When I want big, full-looking and long lashes, this is the one I reach for.

I give the Falsies Big Eyes Volume Express: a HIGH FIVE

Maybelline the Rocket Volume Express in Very Black

This is the most recent Maybelline mascara I’ve added to my collection and I have to say… WOW! It being “the Rocket” is most definitely exactly what it is – it brings my lashes to a new level. First off, the wand and brush are the stiffest and widest out of all four of the Maybellines, and also the one with the shortest bristles. Upon application, I found it a bit strange that the brush didn’t “move” or was as flexible as most mascara wands I’m used to. It also kind of tickled my upper waterline when I tried to apply as close as possible to the upper lash (probably because the bristles are so hard). But I think the design of the brush makes for easy root to tip application. The Rocket is by far the one out of the four that separates my lashes the most — if you want that wide-eyed, lots-of-lashes look, this will most certainly deliver. It’s buildable coverage and I find no clumps. This also holds any curl I put in my lashes with an eyelash curler all day long. I don’t find any problems with fall-out or smudging.

I give the Rocket Volume Express: a HIGH FIVE

This one made my list of top ten drugstore beauty items under $10. If you want to read a quick review about it and the other products in that post click here! This mascara has the softest, smallest brush (other than the Falsies lower lash brush) compared to all the Maybellines I have here. As you can see from the photo, it’s got a curved wand and this really aids in giving that “cat eye” lift to the lashes and helps to maintain any sort of curl in the lash. The bristles are soft-medium to the touch. I find this does a great job of separating the lashes and I don’t have any issues with clumps. Out of all four Maybellines, I’d have to say this one gives the most natural looking lash.

I give the Colossal Volume Express Cat Eyes: a HIGH FIVE

Maybellline the Colossal Volume Express

This mascara is probably the most “classic” out of all four Maybellines I have, in the sense that the brush has soft bristles, a wider and long classic brush head, and is just a very good, basic mascara. Yes, it does definitely deliver on the volume claims and it does lengthen and separate my lashes. However, I find if I build this one up too much with let’s say, more than 2 coats, my lashes start to look like just one big eyelash, if you know what I mean. So build beware! In any case, this is still a good basic mascara that delivers decent results.

I give the Colossal Volume Express: a SHOULDER SHRUG

There you have it! My Maybelline mascara madness!

Have you tried any of these mascaras? How do you like/dislike them? What’s your all-time-favourite mascara? What do you recommend for me to try that you think I’d like? Is there any mascara that you’d like me to try and review?

Thanks for tuning in again Pretties!!

  2. I’m a HUGE Maybelline mascara fan as well. Last tried the double ended one and it was alright, I found that it lasted me about a month before it dried up so I don’t think I’m going to purchase that again. I’ve bought the Rocket twice and I loove it, and I’m actually missing it quite a bit so I think I’m going to purchase that again soon. I’ve tried the Colossal Cat Eye one and I didn’t like it at all. I have short and sparse lashes so it didn’t give it any volume or length. I’ve never tried the original Colossal, and since I hated the cat eye one, I’m not sure if I should try it.

    • Hi! Yes, Maybelline makes some pretty good ones! Aside from Maybelline, L’oreal makes some very good mascaras too. One of my all time faves is the Voluminous by L’oreal and I recently purchased a Telescopic one from L’oreal too. If you’re looking for length, you might find either of those two helpful for you!

      • I think I tried Voluminous by L’oreal and loved it πŸ™‚ I’ve tried Telescopic before and Stiletto (from Maybelline) and yes they do give you amazing length, unfortunately I didn’t love it because it didn’t hold my curl. BUT maybe I should actually try it again and get a waterproof formula and see how that goes. Have you tried the Butterfly effect (or something) mascara from L’oreal?
